Blanket Fortress Play: Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards at Mt. Skullzfyre

Blanket Fort PlaysEver since I saw Wil Wheaton play this game on Tabletop Season 3, I thought it would be the perfect game to play with the Valkyrie Knights. While we’re still looking for a time where we won’t be too tired out to play a round of this, I managed to get in a game with the Tiger and my cousins.

Setup

One of the greatest things about Skullzfyre (The title’s too long, so I’m just going to call it that) is how funny it can become if you just go with the flow of its high-luck nature. I had more fun being my character and calling out my spells in the funniest way possible than just trying to beat down the other players.

Skullzfyre has a very simple objective: Be the last wizard standing. Twice. Or however many times your group decides to house-rule it. We went with the standard two-round game because it was late and my cousins couldn’t go home too late.

Setup was easy:

  1. Choose your wizard. And try not to annoy the rest of the players with your wizard voice.
  2. Each wizard gets 5 starting spell cards.
  3. Place your life token on “20”. Your wizard dies when s/he reaches 0.
  4. Construct your spell. (Each spell should have a Source, Quality, and Delivery)
  5. Play!

The Game We Played

Playing as Lady Lazervere
Playing as Lady Lazervere

Playing with a group of people who have no qualms about being as funny as possible makes this game incredibly enjoyable. Apart from all the outrageous-sounding spells, an inkling of strategy against this high-luck game (luck of draw) makes the play all the more unpredictable and fun.

Matching spell types across each spell aspect may help with power rolls. Trying to get treasures to help may also help with dealing damage. But as we progressed with the game, we soon realized we were more concerned with having fun and laughs rather than have our wizards stay alive.

So my point about this game is – just have fun with it.

Gameplay Winner: My cousin Jenevee, who played Fey Ticklebottom the Enchanter.

We'll see you on Mt. Skullzfyre!

Skullzfyre is published by Cryptozoic Entertainment, the same people behind the publishing of Adventure Time’s Card Wars, if the art looks incredibly familiar. For more information on this crazy game, click here.
