!!!JO & THE TIGER’S AUSTRALIA ADVENTURES!!!
Okay, it’s not that dramatic, but yes, we went to Adelaide and Melbourne the last 1.5 weeks so I thought I’d share some of our wanderings here, vlog commentary style. I hope.
We touched down at about 9:30 in the morning, Adelaide time, where we got a cab to our accommodation. After a bit of a roundabout and slight tussle, we checked into Miller Apartments, where we got a loft apartment. The counter staff were incredibly helpful, and the place was well maintained with a kitchenette, living room, and of course…
…a staircase leading up to the bedroom loft.
It was still pretty early so we napped until it was time to get up and head to the Haigh’s Chocolate Factory for our tour.
Note: We were not allowed any photographs during the tour, but we were allowed photos of the shop front.
After being shuffled into a room before the tour started, we were greeted by our cheerful guide, Beverly, who started talking about the history of Haigh’s. The free tour itself took 20 minutes, though you got to wander around the shop for as long as you wanted afterwards and you get a discount for joining the tour.
DID YOU KNOW…
- Haigh’s Chocolate is only available in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney. They do not ship overseas.
- Despite their popularity, many processes in making Haigh’s Chocolates are still done by hand.
- They give a crazy load of samples before you start and when you finish the tour.
There are many other factoids I would put here if not for the space constraints. I also liked how they provided chocolate recipe cards for everyone who joined the tour. Aside from all that, I would like to say this: The last point is definitely true. And the Tiger bought A LOT of chocolate.

After the tour, we had a pleasant surprise. While asking for directions back to the city, one of the customers (who happened to just drop by) came up to us and said, “If you guys don’t mind waiting, I’ll have to drive through the city, so I can drop you off.”
The guy who helped us out was called Richard, and he did us a great favour by driving us back into town, and giving us recommendations for dinner. Apparently he’s in the business of tourist transport arrangement. He was just done with lunch and decided to head to Haigh’s to get chocs for his wife (Awww). It was a bit of a bummer that we didn’t get his contact and his car engine overheated though. /sends good vibes towards his direction
A quick run to place our chocolates and get our phone cards, we ended up wandering around Adelaide’s Chinatown and Central Market area. After a good walk around the restaurants, we settled down at Passatempo Caffe Ristorante, an Italian restaurant with al fresco seats along Gouger Street.
While the Tiger got a Calzone that was big enough to have its own wall climbers, I got a vegetarian penne dish that was big enough to feed two.
The dish itself was nothing out of the ordinary – garden vegetables, marinara, pasta al dente – but I think what many people underestimate is the freshness of the vegetables. The crunch and bite of the tomatoes, peppers, and zucchini turns a homemade, everyday dish to something to celebrate.
And because of this, the marinara does not have that overly-tart, cheek-piercing sour aftertaste we associate many ordinary marinara sauces to have. The pasta itself was al dente, coated with the right amount of sauce and vegetables to get that perfect balance of spring, smoothness, crunch, and savour. On top of all of that, the colour of the pasta really made my dinner – great for the eyes and the mouth. Something you can wash down just with plain water.

To end off the day, we finally made our way through the Adelaide Central Market, perusing the many shades and forms of stalls. Technicolor vegetables, various shades and cuts of deli meats, the whiff of many cheeses, crunches of baked goods, and of course, the Australians love their confections and how they are presented.
The Tiger got really taken in by the sights, especially the sign outside the stall that sells coffee beans…
“DEPRESSO: WHAT YOU BREW WHEN YOU RUN OUT OF COFFEE.”
We ended up getting a few components for breakfast before heading off into the evening winds and back to the apartment for an early rest (to make up for the barely-enough hours of sleep on the overnight flight). Although I did hope that we had the chance to return like I did in 2012 (but no complaints).
