Weekend Missions: Thieves Market

When Sarah talked about the Thieves Market and how it’s closing to make way for a new MRT station, June, Raven, and myself got interested. So we made a trip down to the Jalan Besar area.

A little background from Raven: The Thieves Market was started as a black market area when people stole British Army Supplies when Singapore was still a colony. As the name grew, the market just got bigger and more prominent over the years, and is still a landmark to many Singaporeans from the generation.

Needless to say, the market has shrunk to a few rows on closed roads. It was baking by the time we got there, and the people there were selling, in a metaphorical sense, anything and everything. Work boots, old mobile phones, and electronic chargers were one of the many common items being sold there.

It was a bit of a bummer we could not find the old, orange payphone Lyn was asking for.

Oh well.

Yeah, we were wandering around Jalan Besar after that.
