Book Bites: SPORE Con

Book BitseThanks to Jolantru and her husband, the owner of Paradigm Infinitum, the Happy Smiley Writers Group (well, actually only myself and Sarah) had the opportunity to speak at this year’s SPORE Con. The topic – Genre Fiction in Singapore.

Very much like last year, the event was carried out in Pasir Ris East Community Centre, bustling with analog games and a new event this year – the Droid Hunt.

Analog gamers at their peak

The talk itself was very much like a discussion, covering many of the current issues that plague the local literary scene. But negativity aside, we came out of the discussion feeling that there is hope for other genre fiction writers in time to come.

But that aside, SPORE Con seemed to have a great turnout, especially since it was the morning of the first day and the tournaments were just starting. Tables were filled with games like Warhammer and Dungeons & Dragons, as well as other unique board games for kids to enjoy.

Jaslyn, Jolantru’s little girl, taught me to play this artist palette-like game which involved stacking colours. The kid’s got a bright future ahead of her.

Especially when she was spelling out the mind trick drill before the Droid Hunt.

*waves hands* “These are not the droids you’re looking for.”

It was quite unfortunate that Sarah and I could not stay any longer, it would have been interesting to witness the Droid Hunt and other games that you do not usually see in typical Gaming Conventions. Nonetheless, it was a fun morning and I’m looking forward to the next SPORE Con.

P/S – Paradigm Infinitum: What’s a good analog game for a person who has never played heavy-duty analog games before? Hee.
